The Martian

The Martian alternative book cover design

Title: The Martian
Author: Andy Weir
First published: 2011

Andy Weir’s debut science fiction novel follows the plight of Mark Watney, an astronaut left stranded on Mars who is forced to improvise in order to survive.

I wanted the cover concept to convey how trapped the titular “martian” is throughout the novel, but without coming across as overtly bleak. I used a more typically “sci-fi” typeface for the author’s name, but settled on something a bit more refined and unexpected for the title, to better convey the lead character’s surprising adaptability. The main image, a colour gradient with some movement applied to it, is empty and foreboding, but also still beautiful.

This is cover is a reimagining and not commercially available, any fonts or images used have been included as part of a personal project only.
