Title: The Cuckoo’s Egg: Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer Espionage
Author: Clifford Stoll
First published: 1989
Chronicling his first-person account of the hunt for a computer hacker who broke into a computer at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), Clifford Stoll’s The Cuckoo’s Egg starts with tracing an erroneous 75 cents, but ended up with a hunt for a former KGB asset.
For the cover, I loved the idea of using a gradually deteriorating typeface to hint at both the hacker-nature of the (true) story, but also to suggest a race to track the hacker down (before they vanish into obscurity).
The image is a file photo of the real-life hacker, suitably distorted and treated with elements of the spot orange ink used throughout the cover.
This is cover is a reimagining and not commercially available, any fonts or images used have been included as part of a personal project only.
